We begin this session as the dust has not yet settled from our fight with the Hippogriff and his seraphim minions. Present are Bulger Cuttlefish, Obadiah, Lydia, Targoth, Turok, Stak and Merric.

Looking up at the Hippogriff we all noticed it’s face had taken on a more human albeit seraphic visage. It’s voice was now soft and soothing and it was hard to imagine we had been battling this beautiful creature just moments ago. It looked downward at us and said in a soft, angelic voice: “If you are ready for it the truth shall be given. You have been deceived.” It paused briefly and smiled at us. But then, a look of surprise and confusion came across it’s face. Then, a look of fear and it shouted to us: “Run! Run!!” It’s face contorted in fear and pain as suddenly it’s body began to twist and morph into a dark, seraphic humanoid with gargantuan wings. It towered over the other two seraphim. The feelings of warmth and serenity we had begun to experience were now replaced by darkness, despair and foreboding.

Once the metamorphosis was complete and the “demon” jumped down from the cliff and with a flick of it’s wings landed lightly between the two seraphim. It held it’s hands out to either side while still looking forward at us. The light seraphim was repulsed and tried in vain to refuse the summons but was drawn inexorably into it’s grasp. On the other side, the dark seraphim gazed up at the demon in rapture and willingly submitted. As the demon grasped the hand of each seraphim it closed it’s eyes and they began to writhe and contort as they were absorbed body and soul into the demon. They each dissolved into puddles of energy that were completely devoured by the dark entity.

The demon now coursed with the power it had stolen from the two seraphim. Streaks of gold and crimson energy pulsed throughout it’s body. It’s eyes slowly opened as it faced us. Now the battle began in earnest! Stak tried to speak with the creature but it ignored him completely. Targoth lunged forward and swung a mighty blow at the creature but it deftly swatted away his first strike. Almost casually, it held out it’s right hand and a small, dark obelisk rose from the earth. It held out it’s left hand and another rose from the other side. The first obelisk pulsed with energy and a wave of pummeling damage struck those of our party that were nearest to it. The ground all around these two dark pillars began to churn. Merric called aloud for Elyndra to be with us in this battle and fired an arrow at the demon. His arrow was true and struck the first damage against this mighty foe. Obadiah fired off a web at the creature and managed to encapsulate it in the sticky mass. Apparently the arrow strike and the webbing caused a brief moment of distraction as the angelic creature from before briefly exerted control over the monster. We could see it’s tortured face once again for only a moment and during that time it caused another, larger, white obelisk to rise up out of the ground between the two dark obelisks. Then, with a violent wrench of power and anger the demon re-established control and burst forth from the webbing. It cast some type of spell and a wave of fear and despair rolled out away from it.

Merric, Lydia, Obadiah and Bulger were overcome by this wave and fled in different directions. But Stak, Turok and Targoth were unaffected and pushed in to attack. Stak used his breath weapon and showered the creature in acid. Targoth took another mighty swing with his Great Axe but the creature was much more agile than it’s large size would indicate. Turok cast Toll the Dead on the now injured monstrosity but it failed to take hold. Bulger was the first to shake off the fear that had gripped more than half the party. He felt a strong pull towards the light obelisk and reached out his hand to touch it. As his fingertips brushed the warm stone he was filled with energy. His wounds and battle fatigue faded away in a second. He spun towards the demon and fired off Magic Missiles. They were visibly stronger
than normal and struck the beast with more damage than was usual. The magic missiles must have thrown off the demon’s next attack as it swiped it’s mighty wings at Stak, Turok and Targoth but missed all three. The blast of air was powerful but all three held their ground. With the flap of it’s wings it settled to the ground a few feet away from them.

Seeing the effect the light obelisk had on Bulger, Merric shook of his fear and dashed towards the light obelisk. As he touched it he too was energized and healed of all injuries. He switched to his rapier and moved to join his comrades attacking the demon. Within moments the rest of the team had made their way to the light obelisk and each was healed and re-energized. With the last touch it’s light began to fade. The ground around the dark obelisks had begun to churn shortly after they popped up from the earth. Something inside the roiling mass was beginning to claw it’s way out of the ground. Targoth leapt forward and engaged the first creature. The dark demon now flapped it’s wings and flew towards the light obelisk. It cast another spell and crystal shards sprang up all around the quickly fading light obelisk. Obadiah and Bulger were each caught in this maze of crystals and each took damage. Turok spotted the second shadowy humanoid crawling up from the ground near one of the dark obelisks. It locked eyes on Turok and lunged forward at him. But, it’s attack was so clumsy that both Turok and Stak had opportunity attacks and injured this smaller monster gravely. But they didn’t stop it. Obadiah managed to wrench himself free of the crystal maze and moved to attack the first shadowy demon that had crawled from the earth. Before he could strike the two dark pillars belched forth a dark cloud that flew up into the air, solidified into a third shadowy demon and landed in the middle of the battle. We now faced one apparently elder demon and three of his minions.

Targoth covered his blade in blood and swung at one of the smaller ones. His strike not only did damage but seemed to draw some of the creatures life energy into himself. Turok tried a gamble and aimed his Guiding Bolt at one of the two dark pillars. His radiant energy was the opposite of the energy coming from the obelisk and it blew it to pieces. Meanwhile, Bulger’s attempts to free himself from the crystals were only causing him more injury. So, he remembered his Misty Step and deftly teleported out of the trap. However, the prickly nature of the crystals his clothing and most of his possessions were still trapped. The destruction of the first dark pillar had a profound effect. The Flying demon crashed to the ground in pain. It landed hard and then rolled quickly to it’s feet. The newest demon to appear cast a Silence spell on Stak, Turok and Targoth. They were silenced but still in the fight. Now the other two smaller demons attacked Targoth and Turok. Targoth took so much damage that he dropped to the ground. Turok was bashed but still upright.

Stak performed a brilliant move by using his mage hand to topple the remaining dark pillar. At the same time, Bulger, butt naked but still in the fight, cast a well-placed shatter spell that caught The large demon and two of his smaller cohorts. They were destroyed but the big boss was undeterred. At this stage of the battle there was only one smaller demon remaining. It absorbed the power of the now destroyed dark pillars and funneled that energy into the larger demon. It hurled this mass of energy at a nearby, crumbling watch tower and it collapsed directly onto Turok. He was completely covered by the rubble and we all feared the worst. Merric stepped forward swiftly and ran his rapier through the final small demon. It was a killing blow. As he danced back away from the fight area he realized, almost to his demise, that the larger creatures reach was much greater than a normal creature and narrowly avoided it’s opportunity attack. During the chaos one of us managed to get some healing to Targoth and as he staggered to his feet he used the bearskin he had been carrying for so long. This gave him only half damage from all sources. He lumbered back into battle. The big demon, seeing his minions vanquished, lashed out with another mighty sweep of it’s wings. Stak took critical damage this time and was knocked unconscious. Lydia was down as well. And Targoth, though still fighting, was near death himself.

Bulger upcast his remaining Magic Missiles and blasted the creature with four solid hits. It crumpled to it’s feet and died. The battle, at last, was over. Merric rushed to stabilize Stak while Bulger and Targoth tended to Lydia. A quick search of the demon and Merric found a small wooden box 12” x 6” x 6”) and a 60’ length of silken rope. Bulger discovered a scroll of Grease spell and tucked it away in the hopes he can enter it into his spell book. In addition, a tattered yellow sash was discovered. It had a magical aura to it but no other determination about it could be made in the moment. We began the arduous task of removing the stone blocks covering Turok. It took a while as the tower had buried him completely. But we eventually found our fallen comrade and it was as we feared.

Turok's death had been instantaneous. Obadiah began preparing him for a druidic ritual of death.

Meanwhile, Bulger examined the rope and box that were discovered and both had magical
auras. We have yet to discover their secrets. The body of the fallen demon began to slowly fade from existence. The voice of the angelic creature it had consumed came to us faintly: “My time is short. You have done well. I will grant you two questions. Ask me anything and I will tell you what I know. But my time here is nearly spent.” As we close this session we are discussing what two questions to ask.
