The Shattering
A Summary of the Cataclysmic War of 333 AC (Ascendant Cycle)
Compiled from surviving records of the Crownwood Expanse, the Saltwind Badlands, Frostreach Monasteries, and Marbleborn archives.
Overview
The conflict remembered as The Shattering erupted in 333 AC, lasting just over nine brutal cycles. Though often simplified by modern historians as a territorial war, the truth is far darker: it was a convergence of divine pride, mortal ambition, and the final unraveling of the Aurelian Forged (Marbleborn).
By its end, an estimated 4.6 million lives had been lost across Valecar.
Civilizations collapsed. Entire bloodlines vanished. The Marbleborn were reduced from tens of thousands to scattered remnants. Famine swept three continents. Disease followed caravans like shadows. And for the first time in recorded history, the Gods were believed to have turned their faces away from the mortal plane.
The Spark
The war began in the Golden Lowlands of East Valecar, near the river-city of Halverreach, when rival human kingdoms clashed over control of Aurelyx-aligned relic forges left behind from earlier cycles.
These were not ordinary artifacts.
They were dormant Aurelian Foundries — ancient creation engines once used to birth Marbleborn in Aurelyx’s image.
When King Rathmore Veyl of Halverreach attempted to reactivate one, the ritual failed catastrophically. The resulting magical backlash killed thousands instantly and corrupted the surrounding ley lines.
This act was later condemned as The First Heresy of Radiance.
Within weeks, neighboring powers mobilized. Religious orders accused one another of blasphemy. The Scar bridges closed to civilian travel...freezing trade entirely.
Major Factions
The Radiant Concord
A coalition of eastern kingdoms claiming divine authority through Aurelyx. They fielded Marbleborn shock legions and heavily armored human paladins.
The Ashbound Compact
Western badlands states, desert clans, and Thornspan mercantile houses, unified under pragmatism rather than faith. They employed war-magi, artillery constructs, and brutal mercenary armies.
The Aurelian Forged
Once neutral custodians of divine law, the Marbleborn were forcibly conscripted by both sides, violating ancient pacts with Aurelyx himself.
Prominent Figures
High Marshal Ser Caldrin Hale
Human. Champion of the Radiant Concord.
Led the Marbleborn Vanguard during the Siege of Thornspan Reach. Remembered as both brilliant tactician and butcher — ordering three river districts burned to prevent western resupply.
Matriarch Ysavel Thornmere
Elf. Architect of the Ashbound Compact.
Master strategist who weaponized famine by sabotaging Crownwood grain routes. Her actions saved her people but starved tens of thousands.
Architect Prime Vaelor-Ix
Marbleborn. Last High Custodian of Aurelyx’s Will.
Defected from the Concord after witnessing Marbleborn used as expendable siege weapons. Attempted to negotiate peace — assassinated days later. His death marks the beginning of the Marbleborn Collapse.
The Plague-Seer Morcant
Human war-savant who unleashed engineered sickness across the Saltwind caravans. His disease, later called Greywake Rot, killed nearly 600,000 alone.
Key Locations
Crownwood Expanse
Once vibrant forest realms became refugee corridors. Sacred groves burned. The Battle of Silverbranch Hollow left the woods permanently warped.
Blackreach Causeway
Used as a military chokehold by Ashbound forces. Thousands were forced into the under-Scar during retreat routs.
Frostreach Mountains
Monasteries here preserved neutral records. Many were destroyed when both sides accused them of divine heresy.
The Shardfields of Halverreach
Ground zero of the failed Foundry ritual — now a crystalline wasteland haunted by magical echoes.
The Fall of the Marbleborn
The defining tragedy of the war.
The Marbleborn were creations of Aurelyx — living statues forged to uphold balance. Bound by divine law, they could not refuse direct command from recognized sovereign powers.
Both factions exploited this loophole.
Marbleborn were forced into front-line breaches, collapsed tunnels, and sacrificial magical detonations.
By the war’s midpoint, more than 70% of all Marbleborn had been destroyed.
When surviving Marbleborn attempted collective withdrawal, Aurelyx himself is said to have intervened — not to protect them, but to seal their forges forever.
This act is believed to be what truly angered the gods.
Mortal hands had corrupted divine purpose.
Creation itself had been weaponized.
Divine Retribution
In the fifth year of war, skies darkened for thirteen consecutive days.
Harvests failed simultaneously across three regions.
Priests reported silence during prayer.
Arcane currents destabilized.
This period, called The Quiet Veil, is widely interpreted as divine withdrawal.
No miracles were recorded during this time.
End of the War
The war concluded not through victory, but exhaustion.
The Shattered Accord was signed in the neutral ruins of Frostreach Watch.
Borders were redrawn. Trade corridors reopened. Survivors limped home.
But Valecar would never recover fully.
