Rumors, Stories, and Theories

Since the beginning of memory, The Scar has been known to exist. As such, many stories and rumors have been thrown around regarding it. Here are some that are known throughout Valecar.

The Shepherd’s Tale (Western Provinces)

“My grandsire said the Scar was carved by a fallen star that missed the heavens and struck the world sideways.”

They believe the Scar is the impact trench of a celestial body. Shepherds claim livestock refuse to graze facing it, and birds alter migration routes as if avoiding an unseen pull.

Many western villages teach children to bow toward the sunrise afterward, “so the light remembers you.”

The Chain Myth (Blackreach Dockworkers)

Dockhands whisper that the Scar was made by a god trying to drag the world away.

They say something beneath the earth still pulls.

Miners swear that sometimes, deep below Blackreach, you can hear metal scraping stone — slow, distant, rhythmic.

They call it The Tether.

The Sun-Priests’ Doctrine (Ashenreach)

According to the Ember Conclave:

“The Scar is not a wound — it is a sealed gate.”

They teach that the sun was kindled afterward as a holy ward, not merely a source of warmth.

Official doctrine claims that without daily prayer rites facing dawn, “what sleeps below would remember how to rise.”

Privately, even the priests don’t know what that means.

The Briar Druids of Thornhollow

The druids insist the Scar is a place where roots cannot grow because the world itself recoiled.

They believe the land tried to heal but was stopped.

Trees planted too close twist unnaturally. Moss grows black. Animals born near it often lack eyes or develop too many.

Their circles teach that something poisonous to life still bleeds upward from below.

Children’s Rhyme (Common Across Valecar)

Don’t look down where shadows keep,
Don’t count echoes, don’t lose sleep,
When the sun is high, you’re safe and sound,
But night remembers what broke the ground.

No one remembers who wrote it.

Everyone knows it.

Merchant Superstition

Caravan masters believe the Scar is unfinished business.

They claim trade tariffs rose not because of greed, but because staying near the bridges too long makes people irritable, reckless, and prone to violent decisions.

Some swear ledgers kept too close to the Scar develop errors overnight.

They call it The Accounting Curse.

Old Marbleborn Lore (Rarely Shared)

Among the Marbleborn, it is quietly said that:

“The Scar is where perfection failed.”

Their elders claim the world briefly lost its shape there.

They don’t elaborate.

Marbleborn traveling near the Scar often experience periods of immobility — standing motionless for hours, staring into nothing.

They call this Stone Listening.

Eastern Soldier Belief

Veterans from Spanwatch and Blackreach share a common saying:

“Battles don’t end near the Scar. They just pause.”

They report recurring dreams of fighting faceless enemies beneath red skies.

Some wake with new scars they can’t explain.

Deserters often claim the Scar “teaches violence.”

Scholars of the Veiled Archive

A fringe academic circle teaches that the Scar is a failed erasure.

They theorize something attempted to overwrite reality itself, and only partially succeeded.

Their forbidden texts suggest:

Most of these scholars have disappeared.

The Sunward Pilgrims

A minor religious movement believes the sun is not natural.

They walk east every year at midsummer, claiming the light grows stronger the closer you approach the Scar.

Their creed:

“The sun watches something.”

They don’t know what.

They just believe it must never blink.

Common Thread Across All Stories

Despite wildly different interpretations, every culture in Valecar agrees on three things:

Only waiting.

Pale Colossus

There are hundreds of rumors and stories about the Pale Colossus of Frostreach. Here are some of the more commonly heard ones;

“It Was Smaller Once.”

An old Frostwarden claims he saw it twenty cycles ago.

He swears it was shorter then.

Less massive.

Less distorted.

As if it grows.

With every winter.

“The Counting Giant”

The Pale Colossus walks on four limbs.

With each step, it counts.

One step for each child awake past midnight.

Two steps for each door left unlocked.

Three steps for each promise broken.

When it reaches one hundred steps, it chooses one name.

The winds whisper the names of the taken...

“Four Steps in the Snow” - Rhyme that Parents tell bad children

When you stomp and when you shout,
When you will not hear us out,
Four slow steps in drifting snow,
Mean the Pale One starts to go.

Hush your voice and close your eyes,
Or he’ll count your little lies.
