The Last Oathkeeper An elderly knight seeks Esmira out after recognizing the sigil engraved on her shield. During the Shattering, his ancestors survived because Esmira’s outlander clan held the mountain pass long enough for refugees to escape. Now his homeland faces collapse from corruption, famine, and civil unrest. He asks Esmira to honor the ancient oath of her clan one final time. The complication: the ruling powers responsible for the suffering are technically lawful rulers, not monsters. This quest can force Esmira to confront: whether protection sometimes requires rebellion, how far her ideals truly go, and whether the Marbleborn can still inspire hope instead of fear.
The Silent Forge Rumors spread of an ancient Aurelian Forge-Chamber buried beneath a ruined city swallowed during the Shattering. Strange lights now glow beneath the rubble, and nearby villages report people vanishing at night. Esmira recognizes the markings described by survivors — symbols belonging to her outlander clan. The truth could be terrifying: the forge may still be active. A DM could use this hook to introduce: corrupted Marbleborn constructs, lost creation rites, surviving members of Esmira’s clan, or a moral dilemma about whether the Marbleborn should ever be created again.
Backstory
Esmira was not born...She was carved. Deep beneath the alabaster sanctums of the Aurelian Forged, where sacred furnaces burned with divine flame, the Marbleborn were created through rites no living soul fully understood. Stone, gold, blood, and celestial invocation were fused together into living beings meant to stand between mortals and ruin. Each Marbleborn emerged fully formed from the Forge-Chambers, bearing purpose before identity. Esmira emerged during the final decades before the Shattering. Unlike many of her kin, she was not crafted for nobility or ceremony. She belonged to an outlander clan stationed along the frontier regions beyond Valecar’s great cities — guardians tasked with protecting isolated settlements, trade roads, and pilgrims crossing lands too dangerous for ordinary soldiers. Her clan believed strength existed to shield those who could not survive alone. Then came the Shattering in 333 AC. What began as political fracture and territorial conflict quickly became something far worse: divine collapse, mass slaughter, and the unraveling of the Aurelian Forged themselves. Entire Marbleborn enclaves were annihilated. Some turned on one another. Others vanished alongside the silent Gods they once served. Esmira witnessed cities split open by golden fire. She saw plague caravans turned away from fortified gates. She watched desperate rulers sacrifice thousands to preserve their own bloodlines. Civilization did not collapse all at once — it abandoned itself piece by piece. Her clan survived longer than most because they stayed far from the centers of power. They escorted refugees through wastelands, defended starving settlements, and held mountain passes against raiders while kingdoms burned behind them. Over the years their numbers dwindled until only a handful remained. The moment that defined Esmira came during the Fifth Cycle of the war. Her clan discovered a ruined village hidden beneath the cliffs of the western ashlands. The survivors were starving — mostly wounded civilians, elderly refugees, and children orphaned by the conflict. Another Marbleborn faction had already deemed them “unsustainable” and left them to die to conserve supplies. Esmira’s clan chose differently. For thirteen nights they defended the village against marauders and deserters despite knowing it would expose their location. They shared their remaining food. They escorted the survivors to safer territory. In the final assault, nearly all of Esmira’s clan was killed holding a narrow mountain passage so the refugees could escape. Esmira survived because the last clan elder forced her to retreat. Before sealing the pass behind her, the elder told her: “We were not forged to rule the weak. We were forged so they would survive what they cannot face alone.” That belief became the foundation of Esmira’s existence. After the Shattering, she refused to return to civilization. The kingdoms that emerged from the ruins disgusted her — opportunistic rulers pretending to rebuild while exploiting the broken. Instead, she wandered the outskirts of Valecar for decades, living among ruins, hunting beasts, and appearing only when settlements faced annihilation. To most people, she became a myth: a horned woman of marble skin and golden veins carrying a warhammer and shield through the wastelands. Some believed she was the last divine guardian. Others thought she was a ghost left behind by the Shattering itself. The truth is simpler. Esmira protects the weak because she saw what happens when power decides certain lives no longer matter. She carries the memory of a clan that chose sacrifice over survival, and she refuses to let their purpose die with them. As long as even one Marbleborn still walks Valecar, she believes the strong still have a duty to stand between the innocent and the horrors of the world.
